To buy or not to buy

Stoyle
I'm looking at a 77 Honda CB750 Four. It is a little rough around the edges. The engine runs but has some trouble starting and warming up, the seller says that the carburetors need to be balanced and it will run perfectly, I don't know much about these bikes and was wondering whether or not this sounds right or if there could be any underlying problems that may be worse than a simple carb synch.

The engine could also have other issues like low compression due to valves being out of adjustment or even burnt valves and or worn piston rings.
Just a warning.

These engines are very reliable. I know of one with over 100,000 trouble free miles. How many miles does the one your looking at have?

Providing they are serviced regularly.

What is the seller asking?

this engine has almost 20K miles, I read that old hondas can take up to 200K between engine rebuilds. He was asking 1350 but he's willing to take less.

Get a compression tester meant for bikes, car testers work but the hoses are incorrect and will give lower readings because of increased hose diameter.
If compression is good, then I would spring for it.
The carbs will need to be cleaned, this is the biggest issue on hard starts and poor warm up, not balancing or synchronizing(the more used term).
Expect to spend some cash to replace or fix things though. It IS an old bike after all.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

Thanks everyone, I'm getting it tomorrow for $850, I'm going to buy the synchronization gauges and hopefully I can get it up and running by myself. I'm sure I'll be back with questions.
