Trans Cover oil leak, new gasket

I replaced the trans cover gasket today and now it is leaking more then it was before. It is not pouring out but there is oil on the ground after a few hours.

 I cleaned all the surfaces and put the gasket on the cover and then slid it on to the transmission and over the gear shift. Should I have put it on the transmission first and then slipped on the cover? If so how do you hold it on there while you put the cover on and get the bolts in? Should I have used some type of RTV black silicone on there first?

Please help any advice would be great.
