On the valves, just use oil. Since the 78 K did not come with gators I don't know which type is on your bike, so can't answer that. On the wheel bearings, check them. Just put your finger in the center and turn them. They should turn smoothly, but have resistance. No resistance, or rough, replace them. The stock steering ball bearings do SUCK!!!
Just get the replacement roller bearing kit from Cycle-X.
