Following the FSM to the T.
Feeler gauge will not go underneath the adjustment screw. Even when completely backed out. No Clearance whatsoever. I can't figure this out. Cylinder 1 is at TDC. Anyone else ran into this issue? How did you overcome?
Thanks in advance!

Not trying to sound like a smart aleck, but it's kinda hard to get that feeler in there. You really have to put a pretty good bend on it to make the curve under the tip of the rocker. Try that,if you already did....then I'm out of ideas.Good luck.

Yea, I've heard it's tricky. Been doing this for a while, I can assure you there is no clearance. This may be an indicator that the timing is off, no? If I'm relying on the timing plate as an index...

Yea, sounds like your getting stuck on the valve stem.

I pretty much figured you knew what you were doing but myself,I need all the help I can get. Good point on the timing index marker. Could be the issue.
|
|
Unfortunately that's not the case. There is no clearance on cylinder 3's intake or cylinder 2's exhaust... According to the manual there is supposed to be. Even if I back the adjusting screw completely out, zero.

Shiny, I'm in need of all the help I can get too! I just meant I've been out here in the garage a while.

Anyone know of another way to determine when to take a measurement?

Take a breath and start over.

Easy way to tell if you have clearance. Grab the rocker and see if it will move back and forth. If not, then turn the timing plate 1 full revolution and check again.

I'm with Re-run. You are probably on the wrong revolution with your timing. Throw out the FSM, and crank the engine over until both valves are loose. Then bring it to the TDC mark, and adjust them.

Re-run, do you mean turn the crankshaft one full turn? If so, I've done that. Is the manual correct in stating that you can measure/adjust cylinder 4's intake and exhaust at the same time?
Could it be that while the 1-4 "T" mark is aligned properly, the valves are not fully closed?

Not on both cylinders at the same time.

Thank you all for your input! Finishing a smoke and back at it. Hopefully armed well. I think I understand what's going haywire.
I'll come back and tell you all if I've got it done. If not, I may be curled up in a corner somewhere.

So... When cylinder #1 is at TDC, I am theoretically able to adjust:
1's in/ex
2's exhaust
3's intake
One full rotation after that and it's:
4's in/ex
3's exhaust
2's intake
Right?
Can't figure out why this is not working.
Maybe I should get a visual confirmation that the cylinders are at TDC?
Or, is there a simpler way to approach this?

If you have not done so, remove the spark plugs, makes turning SO much easier.
Take off the exhaust cap for #4 and turn slowly on the points cam. I know the fsm and others say not to but if you use the right socket and have the plugs removed, it is no problem.
Turn it and watch for the rocker to go down and then back up. When it is up, the valve is closed and the rocker should move and you should be able to find tdc easily.
Maybe this will help.

If, you will go back a few posts, you will find some very good information about how to go about adjusting your valves. Including forgetting about that map thing in the FSM, and doing it one cylinder at a time. Feel both rockers to make sure they are loose. Keep rotating to the TDC mark, for that cylinder, and adjust. Then move on to the next cylinder.

I think I understand what you mean. Thanks again, all. Map thrown out the window!
Hope this helps someone in the future, this has had me confused all day long. Love when a eureka moment happens!

Well, I adjusted one cylinder at a time.
Lined up the T for 1.4
Adjusted in/ex on cylinder 1
Lined up the T for 2.3
Adjusted cylinder 2
Lined up the T for 1.4
Adjusted cylinder 4
Lined up T for 2.3
Adjusted cylinder 3

Will go back through in the morning and re-spec everything. Try again.

I just eyeball mine when I do it. Going by the pointer befuddles my simple mind. I pop all 8 port covers off and just do them one at a time. Front to back, left to right-whatever is easy to get at. Turn the crank by hand and when I see a rocker no longer moving up (closed) i turn the crank just a smidge more, just to be sure, while making sure it stays up,and adjust that one valve. Rinse and repeat 7 more times.
