Voltage Problems

Ramiz09
Hey everyone, i'm new to this site, but i'm in a bit of a quandary. I have a 79 CB750 L. When i first got it, it sometimes wouldn't start, with the key turned on and full charge the ignition button did nothing and the bike wouldn't turn over like it was dead. after turning the key back and fourth (on and off)  or push starting it, the bikes ignition switch would work, after it was warm.  Then my stator finally went out, after replacing the stator the bike is now charging to 12.5 and starts intermittently, same issue, also if i turn the headlight on in any gear (and not in neutral) the bike will die. and the bike wont fire with the head light on intermittently as well. Possibly a bad voltage regulator? any ideas?

I would start looking for bad grounds, and shorts. You have more then one problem there. I would also suspect a faulty ignition switch. Also your charging system should be putting out around 13.5 volts at 2000 RPM. You can download the factory service manual for free from the manuals section on the home page here. It has very detailed instructions on testing the charging system, and its components.

Thats what i feared. The guy i bought it from hacked the wiring, so the ignition switch is horn button. Considering he is not an electrician, there could be a few. thank you.

I would suggest getting a new wire harness really. But as I know that cash can be hard to come by, you should go through every ground and clean them up. Same with the connectors. If any connector is questionable, replace it or solder the wires.

As tools said, you should charge from 13.5 to 14.5 volts or so.

It was a bad ground, when i bought the bike it appears a wire was never grounded under the tank, after fastening it to a screw she runs right as rain. However, she is getting so much juice that my after market blinkers are staying lit when i turn them on as opposed to blinking. I appreciate the advice, fellas.

Your aftermarket blinkers are not pulling enough juice to trip the flasher unit. Try replacing the flasher unit with one designed for LED lights.
