Voltage Regulator

cb750
My '75 isn't charging.  When it's under load I'm only getting about 12.4 volts across it so I'm starting to investigate where the problem might be. The bike left me stranded a couple weeks ago, I was able to kick start it and get home which was cool. But my old Chiltons manual tells me in order to check the alternator output I need an ohmmeter and a voltage meter and you connect them in series to the positive side of the battery and this will tell what the alternator looks like...well no a  days you buy these digital multi purpose meters so I don't know how to hook that up to the battery and check alternator out put??? Any ideas woould be great. Plus I discovered there are actually points in the regultor that might need to be re-gapped....I tried it but not sure I got it right..is there any test using the multimeter to check the regultaor?

Go to the auto parts store like advanced auto, or auto zone (i got mine at advanced) and go by all the testers and there will be a little tester thats 1 inch by about 7 inches and it has a positive lead and a negitave lead, it test battery volts and alternator or in our case stator votls. it also has a little magnet so you can put it on a tank, I believe that for the alternator you have to be atleast above 2,000 rpm's to get the charging system to work. If that checks out ok check your rectifier.(spelling?)

Thank you for the help, I'm still working on the bike. I ride it and work on it to minimize down time. I have a multimeter but I'll go to the storte today and get the one recommend and give it a try.
