Wanted to buy: parts for CB750 cafe project….

MarkPBG
This post was updated on .
Ok, I'm going to go ahead and put up my whole (nearly) want list for the basics to start this project.
I'm located in South Florida, ZIP 33410 (for figuring shipping)

Things I'd like to find: Frame- '69-'77 WITH title, 140MPH speedo and Tach (my original has a 10K redline and reads to 12K), handlebar switch housings left and right, brake caliper, '78 or '79 swing arm (I think that's the one that's 2" longer and a direct fit for my '74), spare set of carburetors for a '74 (in cheap, needs a rebuild condition, or rebuilt if the price is right), fuse holder, aluminum rims (spoked style- I see a lot of cafes with these, and they look new, does someone make them these days?), Spare set of front and rear hubs for wheels ( so I can polish them and learn how to rebuild them)
I have a small budget and can't likely buy ALL of these at once, but I don't expect it all to be immediately available, so I can get a few parts at a time. I'm giving myself just one year to build my cafe.

Also, does anyone know of a source for the battery cables and mini-wiring harness that connects the main harness to all the junk in the headlight? I've only seen it on that direct from Japan website and it costs a fortune! (well, it used to, I can't even find the link anymore. It was Japan direct and all the prices were in Yen)

I found the starter, no longer need a spare

The wheels, you are looking, for are from the 76-77 automatics. They are the hardest aluminum I have ever seen. They are all most impossible to buff, so they still look good after all these years.

The ones I saw had red lettering stamped into the rim, They were definitely not a factory item. They had a more aggressive squared off look to them where the factory rims were more contoured. I'll try and find a pic.
Also, wanted to try and find 19" or even 20" for front and rear. Most definitely not stock sizes.

Found them…excel rims…aluminum, brand new, too expensive. Looks like powder coated originals for this project. Too bad, I wanted to go just a bit wider.

Other then the red lettering, it looks just like the stock matic rim. They are 19 front, and 17 rear. I know they look real good with a 5.00 tire on the rear.

I looked close, and the red lettering is actually just on a sticker. I want the aluminum to save weight. I would look for stock matic rims, but I want to put the same diameter front and rear, and use a 6.00 on the back for a more aggressive look. Of course, I have not yet checked to see if I can even get tubes in those sizes. lol

Those spoke nipples on that excel rim are individually tig welded on.I bet that IS an expensive wheel. Just the labor alone would be insane. Even "robot labor".

Mark, can I interest you in a tank for your build?*insert high pressure sales tactic here______*

Insert pictures and prices here…. LOL

One of the reasons I liked the wheel the moment I saw it…the quality is obvious!

It's different than the style I will be using, but thanks for the pic! When I upgrade my tank it will be a style similar to this….

http://www.roccitycafe.com/item.php?path=store/aytank,

It's just a beautiful tank! My original will function until then, as it has almost no rust inside and no holes or leaks. It looks like it's barely 5 years old. :) Got a new petcock and cap seal for it the other day.

Good luck with the sale. :)

I have a '79 K I'm parting out, and have the swing arm there. If that's the one you're looking for, let me know and let's see if we can make a deal. Either reply here or email bosco391 -at- yahoo -dot- com.

Re: Wanted to buy: parts for CB750 cafe project….

MarkPBG
Yeah I definitely want one. I won't be racing my cafe so the rear end flex isn't going to be such a problem where I NEED one made from square tubing, racer Dresda style like Carpy sells. Plus I like the way the round tubing matches the round frame tubing a whole lot better than the box style. More old school style, if you know what I mean.
I don't know what they're worth, so just shoot me a price and I'll let you know if I can cover that. Thanks.
According to Tools in this thread...http://honda-cb750-s.456789.n3.nabble.com/Swing-arm-for-CB750K-1978-td3463898.html….the '79 will be a direct bolt in for my earlier '74.
Can you give me a quote shipped to 33410?

The 79 will bolt in, but does require a few modifications. I use my 4 1/2 inch grinder with a cutoff wheel, two hose clamps, for guides, and a small square to double check my cutting. You will need to drive the bearings in a 1/4 inch on both sides, then cut a 1/4 inch off each side. You will also need to trim the inner piece 1/4 inch on each side. Also, you will need to drill out the swing arm mounting holes in the frame to 5/8 inch. Oh, and, you will need the 79 swing arm bolt. Took me about an hour to mount one. Most of the time was spent cleaning the grinding dust out of the bearings.

Re: Wanted to buy: parts for CB750 cafe project….

So none of the longer ones are a direct bolt in? Oh well, the work sounds easy enough. Plus, I still gotta locate either a frame, or a basket case donor bike for my project anyway, so I have time. (got the tool boxes, building benches now, need an air compressor and some air tools…like a grinder, soon my shop will be ready!) The sale on the lift table at Harbor Freight has been extended in the latest issue of Cafe Racer mag until mid-May…still @$299.
What about using a 10" metal cutting chop saw? I have one from when I used to do my own exhaust systems. It was a Sears sale and cuts tubing very well. Leaves a fine finish too. I could make a tool to scribe a line perfectly perpendicular to the bore without much trouble, then just cut on the line.
I'll be using a needle bearing kit when I do this, so I can remove the old bushing after all the drilling and cutting, then powder coat it, then put in the new bearing.

I must be getting old, or tired. I have been told the 79 is a bolt in, and they changed them in 80. I hope it is true. Maybe, you will find out, for sure, for me. The swing arms I have modified have had roller bearings in them. No need to change them. Unless some one beat them to death.

I will find out when I get my hands on one. Then I will put together a step by step photo tutorial of any mods I have to do to make it fit my '74.

Hey Mark,
If you shoot me an email address, I'll take pics tonight and send them tomorrow if you want. I'll include the swingarm, swingarm bolt, the end caps, and chain tensioner gear (I'm 90% sure it's still on there). How about $35 plus actual shipping for all that? I estimated a 30 lb. package (24"x6"x15") going by parcel post, and it told me $27 for that. I'll have to double-check on weight and dimensions, but does that sound reasonable?
