1: NO! You are not. Electrical gremlins are the worst kind to figure out
2: I'd bet its the voltage regulator. For what ever reason sometimes they fail and will allow the charging system to just run at full tilt vs regulating it down to ~14.5-14.7 volts. Or whatever the manufacturer calls for.
3:Thats always the kicker. When everything is fine one day,then all of a sudden...kaputt. Classic electrical issue.
Did you replace your plug wires with factory style replacement wires? I know some (not all) coils need a certain amount of resistance to operate properly.Without it parts can fail.
For instance,on the SOHC bikes,if you run DYNA coils and crank the bike with the plug wires disconnected it will fry the coils. I'm not saying this is what happened to you,just thinking out loud thru all of the variables.
