Will the wheels off my '76F fit a DOHC bike? These are the wheels in question. Not the brake system, but just the wheels. Thanks

The rear will fit right on. If using the DOHC forks there might be some trouble with spacing since the DOHC bikes have a wider set on the forks.

Thank you sir.Is there anything in particular that can be done to fix the spacing issue on the front?Anyone have any experience with this?
Administrator

Now I do not know for sure if the F had the same spacing on the front as the K. When, you installed the spoke wheels did, you need to change the spacing? If not then, you would need to change the triple trees to SOHC, or make spacers, for the wheel.

I used the spacers that came with the spoke wheels.Fit perfectly. So the F & K sohc must be the same then. Thanks for the info bud.
so the rear will fit, but the front may need spacers or swap DOHC forks for SOHC forks....right?
oh and ribs....thanks man! you didnt waste any time searching for an answer!? thanks again!
any definite answer on this?
Administrator

It sounds like the DOHC bikes had a set of triple trees that held the fork tubes farther apart than on the SOHC's. I know you don't want to get involved in swapping out the triple trees. I wish I had a DOHC to go by,if I did i would jump on the lathe and whittle you out a spacer. Since the fork tubes are farther apart I wonder if the axle would be long anough to span the extra length,or can you use a DOHC axle in a SOHC Comstar? We may not ever make them fit,but we can still found out the answer ! LOL

The SOHC trees will go right into the DOHC steering head, and the DOHC forks will go right into the trees. Then, you would not need to make spacers.

what are the dimensions on the SOHC dual front brakes? i will check mine and see how close they are
Administrator
Ah! You beat me to it! My bike only had a single front brake. Rotor is 10 7/8" dia. & offset is 1" from mounting surface to outermost edge. Rotor thickness is right at 3/16",but that is probably irrelevant. One thing i did NOT think to measure is the bolt circle the rotor bolts on.It's a 5 hole pattern, but i need to measure the bolt circle. If the bolt circle and rotors match you should be able to swap your rotors from one wheel to the other. But the fork width is still a snag.
Also, the right hand switch gear i have is fairly old.Old enough it has an on-off switch for the head light. Not sure if these will work for you or not.
Also they are missing some hardware for the other throttle cable. I assume that would come new with a new cable?Anyone have any insight on this set-screw btw?
Sweet man, yea I just measured mine and theyre 10 7/8" with a 1" offset...so really its just swapping out the triple trees and using my forks? I can handle that...will it matter that mine is dual disc or can I swap it out as well i wonder? wasnt sure due to the fact that the SOHC triple trees will be skinnier??
oh and on the controls, i may have found a cheap parts bike here in town so im gonna check it out this weekend and see what happens before i decide...ill let you know what happens, thanks for the pics

If slow is not interested in that control I might have a home, for it. And if I had a control like that, it would free up the set of DOHC controls I was going to use on Mortal Vindication.

I have the sohc triples if you get in a bind. I was planning on saving them for my next bike but theres no telling if that will ever happen or not.
On the controls, they have never been off the handle bars(according to Pops) so all the wiring is intact. BUT the clutch lever mount has been shaved off. ??? I imagine the top side with all the switches is ok,but the bottom half of the left side control would have to be replaced...unless you got an auto

Most of those left switches did not have a clutch lever. Are, you sure it has been shaved off? Also do, you know if the switches still work? Can, you test them?

I have been meaning to test them...but i am lazy er preoccupied? Now that you mention it,that was not a clutch lever mount most likely. Something is trimmed off.Not sure what. I'll check on it tomorrow
