Wobbling

Dw07u
Hey guys!

Just wondering, have any of you ever experienced your cb's wobble at high speeds?

I take it up to 140km/h no probs, but at 150km/h it starts to wobble, and if I'm accelerating too fast the wobble gets really bad really quick, then I start seeing my life flashing before me and need to slow down quickly while pulling on the handle bars to stop the wobble, and then finally I can relax...

I have checked the balancing, and the tire is pretty old, but the tread still has plenty of mileage on it, the tire does not look like it has any flat spots or uneven wear, the tire is cracking on the side walls tho, so i guess I should replace it soon, but just don't want to spend money on a new tire and then still have the bike wobbling at high speed...

Any advice would be appreciated...

The plies in the tire might be unwinding. If I were you and the shaking is as bad as you say, you best find out what it is. The last sentence is redundant. A tire is a lot cheaper than the Hospital or a Funeral.

Just because you have tread does not mean the tire is in good condition. Rim might be bent, check you wheels. Com Star wheels are known for this. They were not a favorite wheel by riders but Honda stuck by them.

Another issue that would definitely cause a high speed wobble is flat spots. Older tires have a harder time reforming their shape after sitting for a period of time, as the rubber is less pliable with age. Usually flat spots can be felt at very slow speeds also, such as about 20mph. Sometimes the wobble will go away as the tires heat up, but if they are that old the flats will stay. I advise you check mechanical issues such as the aforementioned trueness of the rim, and balance, before replacing the tires. But if they are cracking, it's best to slap on new rubber anyway.

Do you know how old the tires are? http://blog.unsafemotorcycles.com/2010/09/motorcycle-tires-age-matters.html

A tire should be replaced after 7 years even if there is tread left. The rubber hardens and loses traction and develops poor handling.

Also, does this happen on all roads or just some? Rain grooves or wheel tracks from heavy trucks, especially in asphalt, can cause wobbling.

Another thing that can help is a steering damper. For under 100, you can get the damper and mount.

motorcyclesuperstore.com has free shipping on orders over $97, a boon when ordering tires online.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

I might add to check the steering stem bearings and check for play.
