Won't run choked

alehman
Hi all,

my '79 K is now in excellent running condition. The only thing I can't seem to figure out is why when I start up the bike choked, it'll go up to 3000-4000 rpm like it should, but then very slowly return to idle speed and die. Most of the time this happens, some of the time it will behave normally. I have to juice the throttle a little to keep it running choked. Once it warms up, it runs fine without the choke--- no problems. What gives?

Thanks in advance.

I've also checked for air leaks on the carb boots... no leak.

i have noticed a lot of these older cb's are not the most friendly when first fired up.  try adjuting the idle just a little, and when it warms up u should be able to put back in correct spot  if it is like mine it takes a good 20 mins to run correctly

Some of you may not know that choke is not a ON or OFF kind of deal.

If you did not grow up in the manual choke era.

The choke may need to be on half way or 3/4 of the way,
and it depends on the temperature of the day.

Many young men now have grown up that have never
driven a manual shift car. Not kidding.

lucky, are you saying that sometimes a bike can be choked too much and just die from lack of airflow?

I went through this when I first got my bike. Found out [trial and error, and some good advice] to warm the bike up with the choke, back choke off as the bike warms up, ride with the choke fully off or it will foul the plugs. Works for me this way, anyway.

and that's just sad.
