Yamaha R1 ignition switch conversion to work on CB750

surfish95747
Alright you electrician geniuses! I get all kinds of ideas in my head and wonder if they might work. I am currently putting a 2005 Yamaha R1 front end on my 1980 cb750k. I have a 2005 yamaha R1 ignition that came with my front end. I was wondering, after looking at the wiring diagrams, would it be possible to cut the cb750 wiring harness for the ignition and match the wires up with the yamaha ignition to make the yamaha ignition work with the cb750? It looks like the yamaha ignition only has 4 wires while the cb750 has 5. I'm not the best at reading wiring diagrams so i wanted to see if anybody had any ideas that came to them.

If not no worries, I can (with a little metal cutting) make the Honda ignition work with the Yamaha R1 top triple tree, it would just look so much cleaner to have the yamaha ignition in the tree rather than the Honda one. Alright, if anybody has done this or thinks it might work or knows that it will no, let me know.

Not sure if the switches are interchangeable, but if your looking for a cleaner look just move the ignition somewhere else altogether.

Yeah that was my plan C which is actually rapidly becoming plan B and maybe soon, plan A. Thanks Truck!

Another idea (one I'm planning on using) is you can buy the keyless ignitions online for pretty reasonable prices. All you need it the sender in your pocket, hop on the bike and hit the start button.

Hmm, what keyless ignitions have you looked at so far?

I haven't picked one, still needing to do some research. I have found then at J P Cycles, Crutchfields, Ebay. Most come as a kit that include the ignition box, sending unit and even a start button. Prices I've seen go from $35.00 to $100.00.

My plan is to mount it to the side of an oil tank I'm using to hide all my wiring in. I'm probably going to use a different start button since most of the ones I see are 1"+ in diameter and I want something small and inconspicuous. Just an idea for you. Good Luck!

I'll have to look into something like that. Sounds like a really neat idea. Only thing is I like my fork lock but I guess those are easily defeated.

As for using the yammy ignition, I think you probably could. I can't bring the pics up any larger right now, so it is hard to be certain. But I don't see why not.

Yeah, I think I'll just pick up a Yamaha ignition and mess around to see if I can get it to work.

Yah I got the Yamaha ignition to work. Basically I just left off the parking wire and will do without that function. Everything else works perfect.

I thought it would work. Besides, who uses the park function anyways.
