Several years ago a neighbor moved out of the neighborhood. When they left they put all of their junk out by the road for the trash man to pick up. Included in the trash was a 1971 Honda 750. In my youth I owned a 1970 750 that was the same color. The people had already left and the bike was left on the public right of way, so i pushed it home and put it in my shop. The engine is seized and it is in need of a lot of work. That was 13 years ago. I have just recently thought about doing a restoration on the bike. My problem is I don't have a title for the bike. I had the Florida DMV run the serial number, VIN, and they came up with nothing. I asked the local Sheriff's office to run it for any out of state hits and they were not that cooperative. I don't want to put a lot of money into the bike without having a clear title. Does anyone have any advise? Thanks Mike

Contact your local DMV/DOT, ask them how to do a title search for the bike's VIN. Barring that, ask if a bill of sale will suffice to get a title, then go home and make one up? Best of luck. Cheers!

The Bobber I have had no title when I got it. I got a form from the local secratary of state or dps. Called my local police had then run the vin the filled out the form for a abandoned vehicle form. Took it back to the S.O.S or D.P.S and got a green title.

I have been under the impression that it is not hard to get a title in FL. Check with the local DMV. Or, you could get one from itstitles.com Another option would be to buy a custom frame from a place like Cycle one, and build using your parts. Then, you could get a builders title,

Thats awesome to find a bike like that... I'd be so happy.
You could just buy a titled frame, and swap it all. you need to fix her up anyway... shit. Thats great though.
Shiny I got you on a fender. I don't think I'm using mine, in fact I know I'm not going too.. though, I guess I may need to put it on for inspection.... anyone know if you do?

Polecat, you just have to run down to the DMV, they have a form with instructions on obtaining a title for abandoned vehicles, etc. The biggest pain is that you have to run an ad in the local paper (runs in the same section as the fictitious business names/DBA announcements). I'm assuming your from Florida like me, looked into this not too long ago. If you decide you'd rather unload it, I'd be interested.

Thanks Ceruzziracing,
I live in Melbourne, so we're not talking about different state laws. I had already talked to the DMV, and I didn't get much out of them other than they did run the VIN and came up with nothing. I have found that rather than talking to someone at the DMV it is better to go there in person where you may have to speak to a supervisor. My experience has been that there is a vast difference in the level of knowledge of the different employees. If you don't get the right one you may not get the right answer. The Sheriffs office put me in touch with a woman who works for the DMV in the field dealing with auto and mobile home dealerships, and people who build vehicles from parts and need a title upon completion. She called me yesterday and told me to email the VIN info to her along with some pictures of the bike. She said she would get a LEO to run a nationwide search on the VIN and then I would have to make an appointment with her, to meet at a DMV office or FHP where I would bring the bike where she could physically record the VIN. I guess she gives you some kind of paperwork that you take to the Clerk of the Courts office, who in turn assigns it to a judge, who decides to assign ownership.
I appreciate your help and I think i will still go to the DMV in person and ask for the instructions that you talked about. If I decide to unload it I will keep you in mind. Thanks Mike
