advancer problems

Aaron01
Here we go, 1974 cb750 stock air box 4-1 exhaust, this is my problem. I just bench synced carbs threw them on the bike and it fired right up, however if the throttle is touched it goes to 3000 rpm and sticks, but if revved high it runs perfectly. I pulled the Advancer, and its springs looked pulled open. I knew I couldn't find springs new so I tried snipping them off and bending the next coil of wire. Boom! She idles well, but if the throttle is touched nothing happens and it dies in seconds. I noticed when I let the springs go, the arms don't snap back instantly, almost like they are damped or something. Is this advancer useable with new springs? And if so, does anyone have a spring source for ones close to the stock cb's? I know an engineer put that size spring in for a reason. arrgh very frustrated

The spark advance has nothing to do with idle, or control of the engine RPM. It only advances the timing as the engine builds RPM. If your timing was at full advance when starting the engine, you would not be able to crank it over. It would kick, buck, and backfire. Besides, other then physical damage like rust, I have never seen an advancer go bad. You should be able to get new springs at your local Honda dealer. They are the same springs Honda used on millions of bikes. Put you advancer back together, and fix your vacuum leak. That is what is causing your running problems. After fixing the vacuum leak, sync the carbs, and you will be good to go.
