advice again please

newtothis
Hey all, I am lucky to have found this board and my bike and i have come a good distance since we meet you all here.  So the question this time is,  with the original air box on a 1981 cb 750 f, finding the spring to hold up the filter is going to take some time. I am guessing i can use a old piece of 2x2 wood, my buddy suggested useing a piece of small metal.

I would like to know what you all think,

and of course thank you all in advance

Without picturs it's hard to tell what you are talking about.  However have you considered a bungee cord?

I'm 90% sure I know what he's talking about. Under the air filter is the spring-like bar object that holds the air filter up.

Yes, you could use just about anything to prop it up. It just has to keep the air filter up. I would keep working on finding that spring regardless, however.
Turbos, Hondas, 4-bangers, what could go wrong?

He's looking for #4. Discontinued. Shops I'm finding on ebay are not selling them, ebay doesn't have it, froogle.com can't find it.

Start calling those vintage motorcycle shops that seem to have everything; or, call a few different places and see if it cross-references to anything.

Just get a uni foam filter. One of the best you can get and it's only $20.
I run one with absolutely no complaints and you don't neet any springs, clamps, etc. -just pop it in and you're good.

If you cant find an orginal spring, you can make one out of this........

I removed stock air box on an 81 750 and as i remember it you could just bend a piece of sheet metal to hold filter a little silicon gasket maker would help hold it up as well

I like the fact you said to leave stock ,I will be and am doing the same (till a bore is needed)
My F2(1977) runs great ,my mechanic has never touched a CB 750 before ,but only goes by what he has read & knowledge from all type of engines,He can do all this cause all being stock.
Jets / air flow / even gearing does some type of change that has to be felt .I can't do it ,(i understand Engines and how they work but not all the lingo to remember proper orders.
There are many here that work on engines car/atv/other makes, that have great advice to what they fill.                                   Keep going O.K.
