bad tach?

hellsford
Just finished doing a carb rebuild and tune up on my dohc 750 and I was wanting to make sure the pilot screws were in the correct position (was told it should idle at 1000 rpm +/- 100). But my tach wont drop down below 3k while the bike is running and even when turned off sits at 2k and I dont know how accurate it is after those rpm ranges. What would be most likely to cause this? Maybe bad cam gear or damaged tach?

It's hasnt worked since I got it, but wasn't a problem until I needed to make sure I got the carbs right.

Re: bad tach?

will e.
If the bike is off and the tach still sits at 2k than it sounds like an issue with your tachometer. I've cracked speedos and greased the gears but never had an issue with a tach myself.

In my experience high idling issues, if your tach is working properly, are usually caused by air leaking into the cylinders. A quick and dirty test for compression leaks is to spray wd-40 or a small amount of starter fluid on your carb boots or spark plugs. If after a second or two your engine idles higher you have a leak where you sprayed the fluid.

Yeah, to clarify, the bike idles fine, the tach is just incorrect so I cant accurately measure what the bike is at. Wasnt sure if it would be an issue with where the tach connects to the cam or if it could be the tach assembly itself.

One last thing involving instrument cluster bedore I get a chance to tear it apart and toy with it, since I've owned my bike, the neutral light has not worked, could very well be a bulb, but has anyone else had issues?

The bike tach isnt sufficient to make adjustments. It just isnt sensitive enough. A simple shop tach sensitive to 30 rpm changes is what is needed. I have a dwell meter with a tach and I use that.
