ken86
I'm looking to buy in 1980 Honda CB 750 F. the guy is selling for $200. it needs either a new key ignition or Key made for the ignition.all of the gaskets had spring back when I push on them. the front forks are not leaking and the chain was tight

$200.00 is pretty cheap for a CB 750. Does it have a title? I would buy it with the thought that it will need some (well maybe a lot) work.

Well, honestly, at 200 you can't go wrong. It looks like it needs a fair amount of cosmetic work and the pipes are quite rusted it looks like. Even if it ends up being too much, you would easily gain that money back and then some by parting it out.

yes he has the title in hand. he said he had it up and running about 2 years ago and then his son lost the keys for it. i was thing that i would need to do a carb cleaning and some work on the body of it. but looking it over it looks like it will be a good bike to get up and running and do a little work on it at a time. the big thing that is standing in my way of getting it is the wife she things that i would not get it up and running and that i will not get the money back on it if i try to sell it.

If the side covers only need cleaning/painting, they could go for $50+ each, but if their nubs are broken off, that might be a stretch, as they would not just pop into place.  (All prices listed, are retail, not wholesale...  If you sell to a junkyard, you might get $50 for the whole shooting match, less, or nothing, if it has been picked over.)

Gas tanks, free of rust and dents, can sell for $200-$400, easy.  At least, that is what I've seen them priced at on e-Bay, and Craigslist.com.

Instrument clusters can go for $100 and up.

Rims can go for $100 & up.

Frames can sell for $100 and up, but a clear title is important.
--------------------------------------------------------------
If the chain is rusted, it will need replacing.  The 630's are still available, or you can buy new sprockets, and switch it to a 530 chain.

The battery is going to need to be replaced -- count on it, unless it is a sealed unit.

If the seat will need recovering, a professional job will run you $300 and up, most likely.  Call a shop, and ask what they estimate it will be.  Custom piping, marine grade vinyl, custom foam sculpting, etc., will increase the price, but it was worth it, in my case:  link1, link2.

Good luck with your budget.  Remember, marriage is more important than any bike -- IMO.  YMMV.  Cheers!

Well it depends on demand and the overall condition of the parts. I could easily see getting 500 for parts on ebay. Seats in decent shape can sell for well. Carbs are another hot item if they are in good shape.
Wheels can go well to. Some people strip engines down quite a bit but it seems the average complete engine hits 150 - 200. Like I said though, demand makes all the difference.

Check in our parts list and there are a couple sources for keys.

I'm sure you could strap it to the back of the seat somehow.

If you pull the ignition switch, it should be stamped with a letter/number combo.  Once you have this you can order a new key.  Search honda motocycle keys on google.

Blank keys are easy for a locksmith. They can cut they key if they have the keycode (mentioned that it's on the lock somewhere).  Figure on it costing between $25 and $50 USD.

It looks like a nice project bike.  Not pretty cosmetically, but that can be fixed.  You might try the engine and see if it spins.  Seized up will add considerable cost to fixing the engine.  Depending on your level of mechanical expertise, it'll be quite a project, but you'll learn a great deal.  Several of the people on this forum have torn them totally apart and put them back together, so they're a good resource if you run into problems.

After you get the bike, you may want to start a thread in the Projects section.  Document with pictures if you can.  Looking forward to seeing your progress on this.

You could always try this -

It's only illegal if you get caught.

If at first you don't succeed, use more lighter fluid
