brakes

mikeyboy1
just wondering about putting dual disk brakes on my 78 K.never been real happy w/the way they work--slow & squeally..put a steel braided line & it helped a little bit. I realize they're diff bikes but my 650 nitehawk STOPS when I want it to.would like that in my K cause I ride it daily.any thoughts on this?
thanx  Mike

Well can't say I have complaints about my brake. Have a braided line too and it works pretty good.

However, if you want more braking power, you have a few options.

A gl1000 front end can be swapped on. The early models use spokes so things will still look ok.

Some people swap on a cbr front end, but that would be a mag rim and so would require more work to either put on spokes or switch the rear to a mag.

In the manual section, we have a write up on doing a dual disk conversion and it is probably the easiest way and cheapest way to go.

I also do not suffer from squeal. There are some tricks that help stop that.

900C's have a duel disk front, might be easier for the rim swap.
It's only illegal if you get caught.

If at first you don't succeed, use more lighter fluid

Just remember, whatever setup you go with, the stock master isn't really up to it. You will want a better master, either aftermarket or something that came from a dual disk setup.

I have not had any problems with the stock master cylinders with duel discs. You just need to use braided stainless lines. The rubber ones have too much flex.

Re: brakes

My 900 runs a dual disk and as far as I can tell the master is the same as a 750, and I'm stopping a much heavier bike. Never had any problems stopping it. In fact when I first got it I pulled an endo because the rear brake wasn't bleed right and I tried to stop way to fast.
