Just did at little more digging and I think it might actually be fuel fouling; I just read that fuel fouling is typically dry black (which is how my plugs looked), while oil fouling is wet black.  Does that sound right?

Oil on your plugs is kind of a bad sign.  It could mean you have bad valve seals.  Replacing them means pulling the head.

It didn't really smell like much, I guess it sort of smelled like gas though?
