No they do not come out of the coil. However Z1 Enterprises sells a coupler, for the coil wires. You just cut them off, then screw the coupler on to the old wire. Then screw the new wire into the other end of the coupler.

So I am assuming the coils on my '78 are aftermarket then. The coils have threaded caps that hold those wires on.
