Before taking anything apart I would make sure that the battery is fully charged. Make sure to check the water level too.

I had thee same thing happen to my CB750K about five years ago, but for the life of me I cant remember exactly what went wrong. I know they showed me several parts that were burnt out - which were all replced and since then its been as good as gold ever since. The brushes were still 100% OK so they were not replaced , but there were other parts inside the starter motor that had worn out which was causing a short circuit, hence the clicking every time I pressed he starter button. Suggest you remove the starter motor and get a good motor cycle technician who knows all about electrics to see what the problem is

If the battery is fully charged you want to check the connections at the starter, solenoid and especially the battery ground wire.
