clutch replacement

opie18
Hi all,

I am preparing to replace the clutch on my 1980 CB750K DOHC. However, I am not confident on all the parts I need to purchase. While this is an excellent write up on replacing the clutch (http://honda-cb750-s.456789.n3.nabble.com/How-to-change-and-adjust-a-clutch-SOHC-td4040391.html), I am not sure how many steel plates and friction plates I will need. Also, I have a shop manual and am having a hard time locating the "clutch plate B (laminated). Anyone have any idea where to find this part? Here is my shopping list so far..I appreciate any help here! Sorry if I sound like a newb, it's been awhile since I've worked on a bike.

Cheers!

Friction plates: http://www.vintagecb750.com/parts/480/39-1129.jpg (7 pieces)

Steel Plates: http://www.vintagecb750.com/parts/480/39-1408.jpg (6 pieces) From the website: "Above listing is the normal single steel drive plate (6 pc. required) and is not the dual steel riveted plate (one only used)." What does this mean?!?!

It's rare that you need to replace the steel plates, or the springs. However if you look at a Honda parts fich (such as on Partzilla) you will see that six of 1 type of plate is used and one of another in the clutch pack as well as seven friction plates. The vintagecb Part #: 39-1408 is the one you need six of (it says this in the description) and seven of the friction plates Part #: 39-1129. Vintage does not list the duel riveted steel plate, but Honda still has it available if you do need it.

Thanks man! I figured I would replace everything while I have the bike opened up...clutch was slipping pretty bad at the end of last season. Thanks again.

Hey there. So I've spent the morning searching for that one dual riveted plate...can't find it anywhere. All the OEM part sites list is as discontinued or unavailable. Is it ok to reuse the one currently in my bike and replace all the other plates? Thanks guys!

Unless there is damage to it or it somehow is not within spec in the manual, re-using it is fine.

I'm not sure how well the clutch replacement thread posted in the original post will relate to your bike. That how-to was specifically for the SOHC bikes. I've not had to fiddle with a DOHC clutch yet. I really don't even know if your DOHC bike actually used a dual riveted steel or not.

The Factory Service Manual will probably be your best friend for this.
