I am getting ready to rebuild the motor on my 74 750, but have a few questions before i do so:
1) I am planning on buying most of my parts from cyclexchange.net, has anyone bought from these guys? i have called them and they really seem to know what they are doing.
2) I am going to buy cyclexchange's 849cc kit, but I don't know which cam to get to go with it, they offer 3 different cams:
- .360 valve lift and 270 degree duration
- .360 valve lift and 280 degree duration
- .370 lift and .282 duration
above all else I am looking for ride-ability. I am not going to race or anything.
3) I am going to get all new gaskets, should I get new oil seals too while I am at it?
4) cyclexchange recommends heavy duty cylinder studs, are these necessary?
5) how will all this work with a stock carb set up???? I am working on a very tight budget and can't afford to buy a new performance carb set up right now, but plan on it later.
I think that is pretty much it, but I would welcome any advice that you guys with some more experience could offer. thanks.
I would replace the seals while you are at it because they are old rubber and probably dried out and if they happen to leak later you can't replace them without splitting the cases again. The cylinder studs are a good idea because they have been the weak link in performance engines in the past. If you want rideability the milder the cam the better. It should work ok with the stock carbs, but you will probably have to rejet them. A lot of these bikes were built this way in the 70's and worked good.
