Welcome to the forum, but the repair section would have been the best place, for your question. However I will try to give, you an answer. I use muratic acid mixed 50/50 with water to clean rust from the inside of tanks. just be careful not to get any on, you, or breath in the fumes.

I haven't tried the acid but that would probably work the best, however I have put a hand full of 1/4 20 nuts & bolts in a tank and shook it until my arms hurt.  It works pretty good but pull your petcock off first and blow out the tank in between shakeings, its a good workout!

Daddy-o,using 1/4" bolts doesnt cause issues with dings?Seems ike a big bolt.I have heard of people doing that same thing, but i just assumed they were using small machine screws.I used a handful of sheet metal screws when i did mine.It worked ok,but my tank was pretty decent to begin with

1/4 20s are small, bigger than a machine screw though never had a problem with dents.  But I don't work on Chevy's either. lol

I notice, you did not mention it had the original engine, or transmission.

They were lovingly set aside for "upgrades" about 60,000 miles ago, which put them at roughly 230,000 miles AND still kicking.I still have them, dont worry.A 327 and a Powerglide just doesnt cut it for the spirited(although completely legal) driving i like to engage in.I know SOME PEOPLE like 2 speed autos...i prefer a clutch and multiple gears.Am i redeemed?

Way too toxic and severe!!! Muriatic acid is like using an atom bomb to kill an ant.

Use phosphoric acid and very warm water.

Put a handful of sheetrock screws inside and shake them around.

You have to leave the tank with the acid and water solution in it for a couple hours.
If you can fill the tank you will not have to keep turning it all around.

If you buy the KREEM brand kit it explains everything on the instructions.

If muratic acid is, so bad, then why do they sell it at hardware stores? Also it is commonly used, by masons to clean brick. It is totally safe when used with the proper safety precautions. I have used it to clean gas tanks, carburetors, brick/concrete, rusty body panels on cars, and even cleaned an aluminum dump trailer. If it was, so bad; there would not be any life left on earth just from my use.

Re: fuel tank

I did not say it was bad. It is just way too severe for the job of using on a motorcycle gas tank. It could just eat right through it.
The fumes are horrible. IT WILL burn your skin if you get it on you.

Why not use phosphoric? It is easier to use hardly any fumes and etches the metal just the right amount.
And it is better for the environment.

Yes they do sell muriatic acid in hardware stores.
They also sell phosphoric acid  in hardware stores.

Just pick the right tool for the job is all I am saying.
