Thanks guys.  Yup, totally love my Silverwing.  Next addition to the harem will be a cafe racer CB750.  That project will keep me busy and out of trouble.  Hopefully soon so I can post my progress.

BTW, me on the hammock, I'm smoking some beef brisket.  That's how us Texans do it.

Man, I was leaning hard toward the GL/CX style bikes before I got my Shadow. I thought the design was very cool, smooth running bike, maybe a bit undersized/underpowered for long distance riding.  So naturally I got a 700cc v-twin.  Stupid of me, I guess. :-)  But it works for me and my stubby legs.  I was always on tiptoes with my CB750, and the Shadow just fits me better.

If you get a moment, give me/us a feel for how your GL rides.  I'm still thinking the Shadow needs a roommate in the garage.

Totally love the ride.  Different than the CX500 because of the prolink suspension.  Does not have the go go of bigger engines but keeps up good. I'm 5'7" and I can flatfoot it.  Sits higher than a Goldwing so I can lean further and ride faster around them corners.  Had a crotch rocket behind me on a run and he said that I rode it like a crotch rocket.  Fastest I have gotten it was 92mph (80 loaded down).  I'm not a speedster but the 500 works out pretty good.  Nimble enough as a commuter.  I have read reviews where they say it sucks as a commuter but I don't see that.  I have the smaller trunk that I position where the passenger seat is at and ride it as a solo bike.  Changing between seat and trunk was a great idea.  Don't know why Honda never carried that onward.

Silverwing with small trunk added in place of passenger seat

Here is a comparison

And if you want a backrest, just move the large trunk forward

Maintenance is pretty simple.  Don't have to remove the tank to adjust the valves.  If you have to remove the engnine, just drop it down.  No framework underneath it.

I almost bought a Shadow but I wanted something different.  Gas mileage averages about 47mpg.  So I can ride over 200 miles on a tank.  Rides two up with no problem.  Furthest I've traveled was 250 miles in one day.  I did not get sore unlike when riding a cruiser.  No monkey butt.  That in itself is a great attribute.  I traveled 75mph and still had enough power to pass.

So if you want to enjoy the ride, get the smoothness of a Goldwing but also some sportiness...GL500i or better yet the 650i.

Where in Central Ohio you at?  I'm Eastside Cleveland.  Maybe I'll be in your neighborhood and let ya take her for a ride.  Maybe.....

Just outside of Columbus. Lived here since 1966. Cleveland is a bit of a haul on the bike, but I _might_ be able to get there on one tank + reserve. I've never run it completely dry, but I'll get about 130 miles before the reserve light comes on.  Then it's another 25 miles before stutter time.

Nice pix.  I love the trunk idea, and I agree: Honda should have done more with that bike and that luggage setup.  It's too practical.  Maybe that's why. So the engine is a stressed member of the bike.  I like that. It's a very robust case, just like the Goldwing's flat 4/6. Who knows...maybe I'll get REALLY curious and find one.

I'm out of Painesville and I've riden the Old Gal down to Hocking Hills and back.  No soreness on my part and she did good.  I'm planning a trip back to the home country (Texas) next year.  Until then, looking for that elusive CB750 for my project.  Ride safe!

Thanks, Just getting the feel of this forum.  Was on the Costal Ducati Forum a lot but that has been taken down and I no longer have the Ducati.  That pic is about 10 years old but I kinda still look the same.  We no longer do shootouts.  Anyway I like these kind of forums so expect me to be around as much a possible.

Cheers
