It needs a full tuneup. Always start there. get a manual and do the full tune up procedure. there is no point in trying to trouble shoot without covering the basics. You will need to do a valve adjust(one point here, go .01 larger on each valve, it helps reduce wear), check points, if worn badly replace. Check the points AND rubbing blocks that ride on the points cam. You will probably want to get points grease. A bike shop might have some, most harley shops will and the tube will last forever practically.
Check your timing. Adjust your cam chain. CLEAN and reclean your carbs(cant stress that enough).
Set everything to stock basic settings. Air screw 1.5 turns out from lightly seated. Needle in the middle position on clip.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!
