There is controversy on this. I have used a master link and if installed correctly, it is virtually fail proof. As for strength, yes and no. The pulling strength is just as good on a master and that is what a motorcycle does. The side to side is not as much but then chains are not made to twist like that any ways. Also, the average 750 will not make enough power to even stress a master, not even on a 520 chain.
Also, the current chain I have on, even if the the clip DID come off, the side plat will not as I had to press it on anyways. I had to do this with my did roller chains as well.
I would speculate that most stories about clips failing has to do with improper installation. Such as the clip on backwards or not snapped on properly.
About the only time I would say a rivet should be used is in racing.
I would say that if anyone really has a question, go into a cycle shop and ask to see a chain with a clip link and then try to put it on with your hands. unless the chain is junk, it wont happen.
