Hey every one. New guy here. I bought a 74 for 350 bucks. I did the same for my yamaha xs650. I did like every one else and hacked off the back and made a rigid frame. I hand made my seat, forward controls, battery box, tail light, handle bars, and wiring harness.
I wanted something different, and I havent ever seen a really well done 750 here in Jax. I am hoping this will build out to be a cool forum for new builds an tech stuff. I hate the classic stocker vs custom battle. I don't plan to hard tail this bike, but it will come under the knife.
The guy I bought this bike from said that the "spagetti was fucked, but if you put a hot wire to solenoid it would turn over". bargain struck. Got 'er home, and tucked in. I got a diagram from honda chopper, and sorted it out. there was shit soldered EVERY WHERE. I was terrified that the whole charging system was in loop and would be fried.
i replaced the plugs and pulled the carbs. Next I shot some starter fluid in the cylinders, and pushed my starter button....no fire. so as a 650 rider, I decided to kick 'er. FIRED LIKE HELL! I was stoked.
On to the dreaded...with carbs off I broke open the bowls. two were squeaky clean, and two were filthy.
Once reassembled I fashioned a little plate and mounted my new fuse box and igniton stuff. I scored some new hose from the local shop, and fashioned a sweet gas tank from a 20 water bottle with a tiny vent for suction. to my great suprise, It fired...and ran pretty daggum well. once it started to idle, and smooth out after it burned all the poop out of there, I put a towel over the battery and took er out of the yard!
Again I was stoked...kind of. So it ran, but the clutch is pretty well shot. It did run down the block but it kept trying to jump out of second. Would keep third, forth, fifth. Have understood that is shift fork issue most likely.
I hoped that new motor oil might free up the clutch basket, but no.
So it's opinion time. I need some info on two things
1: can the shift fork be adusted w\o cracking the case?
2: my number three cylinder dribbles some oil out. seems like maybe the little manifold that hangs off the block has a bad gasket. Can it be replaced? where can I buy one? can I make one, and out of what?
thanks fellas, pix to follow

well
the shift fork is either good or not, case has to be cracked no bones about. I can cop new seals, tranny, clutch and gaskets for around 200 bucks. I expected worse. SO instead of a cool chopper build forum this will be a HOW I HOPE FIX AND F'D up tranny page.

Welcome blue label! The jump out of second is supposed to be common but I have not had it happen unless I messed up the shift. It is usually the shift fork. I will see what I remember tomorrow as my allergies kick in for a couple weeks and make me tired at night!
Clean the engine and then see where it leaks and let us know.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

good morning, so like the rest of you greasy schmucks, I have more than one old ride. My daily is an 84 chevy, rebuilt 305, 24s, stereo, grille, fog lights and so on, well the folks who had his thing before I did told me it was a rebuilt motor and trans! YAY.....except that they did specify what year. BOOOOO. So, like most, I replaced the rickety quadra junk, with a nice 600cfm edelbrock, not to be lax in the duties as a grease monkey i went for the two step, intake also. I bought a pre 86 intake, for what ended up being post.
I am cheap bastard. I buy every thing I can off the craigslist. As such, I bought said intake from the list, so I cannot return it. Also the only place I can find the proper one is at O'reilly, which will effectively tap my budget for a week or two while I find someone to pawn this Intake on and re-line my pockets!
thanks for reading fellas.
I'll get back to the scoot shortly
