just bought 1980 cb750c

spencer Johnson
Just bought a 1980 cb750c.  My first bike.  I didn't want anything fancy, just something common (cheaper parts availability), big enough to cruise without vibrating to death, and something that would be dependable.  From what I have researched, i should be ok.

It has a spark plug that was cross threaded so I am heli-coiling it.  The carbs probably need to be pulled apart and cleaned.  When I turn on the gas, the gas comes out the bottom nipples of the carbs.  I shut the bottom needles down, but gas keeps coming out.  Is it most likely a float problem?

I put a new battery in with an "on board" trickle charger system that I mounted behind the side plastic cover piece.  I need to slowly begin cleaning, detailing, upgrading different parts as it was mechanically taken care of (engine had just been rebuilt before I purchased), but it has some damaged pieces.

If anyone wants to throw info at me of what to beware of, what to make sure i pay attention to... basically i am open to learning anything people "in the know" are willing to share.

  Welcome
Great group of guys here (well most), I believe most are new to CB 750s and all wont to learn,Like myself,
Seems you know your way around Mechanics by what your doing now, Witch I am still doing Detail, and finding that this bike is stock (old)and needs attention in lots of areas to be as trust worthy as it should.
Your d.o.h.c. should and will be a great 1st bike wise choice.

Welcome to the forum.  I recommend downloading the manual from the links on the front page.  They're a great resource.

To answer your question about the gas leaking out of the bottom nipple on the carbs, yes that is probably a float problem.  That said, what do you mean by "shut the bottom nipples down"?

Also, do you have a link for the battery with the built in trickle charger?  I'm just curious about it.  Do you plug it into the wall?

i closed the bottom "needles", not "nipples."  I'm not that great with carbs, so I would have thought that would have stopped the flow out the bottom, but it did not.  Do you have suggestions for carb rebuild kits?

I custom made the trickle charge unit.  Maybe i can take some pics and post them.  I bought a small enough unit and fabricated it to mount behind the right side plastic cover where you access the battery.  it is actually quite simple and only required a little thinking and welding.  I like the idea of being able to plug in anywhere without having to worry about packing one.

Welcome to the forum. The one thing to watch on the DOHC bikes is the charging system.

regarding the screws that you "closed".  you'll figure this out when you do a rebuild, but you may have closed the float drain screws, or the air/fuel mix screw (you will need to be re-calibrate if you screwed them all the way in).
