low charging voltage

roddy
i replaced the regulator/rectifier unit on my 81 750.  the charging voltage is still below 12 v.  does anyone know if the alternator excitation ciol needs to be grounded, and whether the regluator itself needs to be grounded.  i see inthe wiring diag that the green that comes out of the regulator is not connected to the frame . . .what's up with that?

I do not know much about the later DOHC bikes, but I do know that on Honda bikes green is always ground.

let me know what happens i have somthing of an issue as i have spent countless house trying to ground the reg with a wire to the frame but i seem to have a problem were i have a high voltage at idle then at rpm, which is odd the next step i will be check the brushes on the case cover that touch the router as that is the last thing before i take it some where i too have a 80 750

RE: low charging voltage

Im beginning to suspect that the ground path for the exciter is internal to the regulator/rectifier unit  . . . I just don’t understand why the green that comes out of the regulator/rectifier, appears in the factory schematic, to not be connected to the bike frame.  It is simply shown hung out in the air.  That said, there is continuity to ground from the green that goes into the reg/rectifier so it must be grounded somewhere that I cant see.  Ill let you know.

that is werid that ground just shows it off onto the turn singnal relay dosnt it, funny that u mention that i actually hooked that ground up becasue i have a led turn singal relay and it required three prong, but i know when there is too much voltage the reg send it to ground, do u know anything about the slip ring testing ? am i testing the router right becase i dont get cont between the two slip rings?
