making an exhaust system

Kube
So I was messing around with my 79 750f ss the other day and realized that my exhaust is rusted through on both sides.  I have a bit of experience with fabrication and welding and am considering just making a whole new set with slip on mufflers.  Anyway,I was wondering if anyone has ever attempted this.  Am I biting off more than I can chew?  Of course I suppose I should get the damn thing running again before worrying about the exhaust but I'm just trying to plan ahead.

Depending on how much you want to spend why not just buy a pair of new silencers from www.hdlparts.com. Of course, if you want to fabricate two new silencers, how about making them from high grade and highly polished stainless steel ? I saw a Honda CBX 1000 that had a six inot six hand made stainless steel set of exhaust fitted and it looked stunning. Of course this is in Australia where I am living and have been on the forum since it started

to be honest, I'm trying to save as much as possible.  I'm wondering, what would be the consequences of switching from the 4 into 2 system to a 4 into 1 system?  would my performance drop?  Would the carbs have to be modified etc.  I'm looking at this system

http://www.oldbikebarn.com/Street/1979-Honda-CB750-F-Supersport-Motorcycle-Parts/CB-750-900-1100-Chrome-Canister-4-into-1-Exhaust-System

I would like to go from the up sweep of the original system to something more straight to accommodate saddlebags but with a pipe on each side it would get in the way of the center stand which I really don't want to have to remove.

I had a look at the system from the link you gave me, and yes its a nice looking  system. However, when ever an exhaust sytem is modified from the way the manufacturer desgined their system to suit a particular size engine, something has to be sacrificed, and that means high fuel consumption, flat spots , wont rev properly etc. All these things need to be taken into consideration when changing an exhaust system. So if you decide to run with the system shown, then get the bike dyno tuned as you might find that the carb jetting needs to be changed, as the scavenging system is altered from the factory engineered design. Hence the reason why I have kept everything stock standard on my CB750K. But ulimately, the choice rests with you ,and you must do what you think is right for yourself, not what we on the forum think. We just impart our knowledge and information of these bikes from having owned them ,in my case ,from day one brand new. 29 years in my case
