Screenshot from my Fuelly app. '80 F with an 823 and 4-1. Jetting all over the place. Still tuning.

I'm 230 lbs. Bike has 17" tires and no chicken strips. I cruise 65 mph at 6500. I let her rip and wring her neck. If I putter and poke around she sucks fuel. My best tank ever was 47.1 mpg on a camping trip carrying about 60-70 lbs of luggage. Throw-over saddlebags poking out both sides and a huge duffel on the rear. Tires were pumped up a little extra tight before leaving home.

Oops. You've got a sohc. My bad.

My 76F. Stock engine. 4-1 from Tools. Shinko 712's- 38 psi rear, 40 psi front. 18-46 gearing. Pods, 125 mains, 42 pilots. Typically got 32-35 mpg.

But I rode that bike harder than my DOHC. I pretty much beat it like it owed me money. A lot of money. Never got 3,000 out of a rear tire. Wore out three rear tires and the front was probably good for two more rears. lol

I get around 35MPG on the toolmatic. I thought it should do better, but it is an automatic. However there ows this one ride with a buddy where I only got 12-13 MPG.

Use his pods work and slap on some stacks! Nice set of chrome stacks looks good anywhere!

On the mileage, with a mix of town/interstate, I get about 40-45. If I stick to highways or about 65mph, I can get over 50. I found out the hard way, sort of. My fz6 can't get quite that good.

I never really kept close track of it. Went on a ride where I didn't have many gas stations open, it was sunday and small towns still close up and some don't have pay at pump. I was hitting 160 miles on the tank and had a good way to go to the next town. So I was starting to sweat it some. At about 200 miles, I got to a town and was able to fill. Never hit reserve and didn't even fill 4 gallons.

I don't flow it too hard most of the time. Sure there are times when I do hit the throttle, especially getting on the highway. I don't do burn outs though. But the harder you go at it, the more gas it will use. So if you are really twisting things, it isn't surprising you are only getting in the 30s.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

Pods on my DOHC is still an ongoing battle, but my SOHC had roundtop carbs, which are pretty pod-friendly. The only issue I ever had with pods on the 76 was an occasional, slight stalling at highway speeds if it was windy outside. Crosswind, people call it. I could tuck my legs close to the bike and it would cure it. Pretty sure a couple baffles would have cured it completely, but I was lazy and the issue was very slight. But IIRC, your 78 should have keyholes, which I'm not familiar with. Sorry bud, wish I could help, but I can't.

Pods work fine on the keyholes too. Aside from using a fuel screw instead of an air screw and an accel pump, they work about the same.
