I want to put a 72 gas tank on my 78. Do they mount up the same? The 72 tank seems like it's shorter but I may be wrong. Thanks

Welcome to the forum. I think the seats are different also, and then they made a change with the frame tubes over the engine. They curved the tubes up, so you could do work on the head with out removing the engine. However if you really want to customize, and use the old style tank; you can remove the tubes. Just cut them off. There are several bikes running around with this all ready done. It does not hurt them any.

Well I'm changing the seat as well. I just like the look of the 72 style and want to change them out. I was just wondering what all I'm getting myself into before I buy the tank.

the curved frame in only on the A bikes. I wish they had it on the others since these engines are so damn heavy. The sohc tanks are interchangeable but as tools said, they are different lengths and so are the seats.
I am not positive on this but if you put on a 69-76 tank with the 77/78 seat, you get a gap. if you put on a 77/78 tank with a 69-76 seat, you get a pretty good rub. If you match years, you are good except the 77/78 seats have the hinge on the left side, 69-76 seats are on the right.
