I never knew Honda made a CB 550 in 83. I thought they stopped in 78. However up to 78 the engine number never matches the frame number. They were stamped on different lines, and came together at the end. You frame VIN is the one that has to match the title. However up until 78 they had a "K" designation. This was a number right after the "K" in the VIN.  such as "K-2, K-3, K-4..." This will be your model designation. Since the only changes Honda made to the CB 550 was different carbs, and seat/tank styling for the 77-78 years, parts will not be hard to find. vintagecb750.com and cb750supply.com have sections for the 500-550 models.
A call to your local Honda dealer should answer all your questions.

I think the only Cb550 made in '83 was the CB550SC Nighthawk. That could be fun with the 750 sohc motor!

You have what is called a "custom" bike. The wheels scream yamaha, that's for sure.
The tank is not a honda tank. Looking up the models for the year 1983 and there was:
vt500
cx500
ft500
cbx550

And not a 1 looks like your bike. Not even close.
the vt would be a twin if honda used their typical scheme.
The cx was a v-twin mounted sideways.
FT was more dirtbikeish in looks.
And the cbx was cb900 styled.

Normally I would say that the vin tag would give the type of bike, but in this case, being bobbed and all, it is possible the tag came from a different frame. In 83, the only bikes honda had as shaft were the cx500, vf bikes, and gold wing, I think. Ultimately, I think you will need to take the vin model and try to match it to another of that year and hope it is the same. The engine, you will need to use the # off that to determine your exact model and year engine.

So I got ahold of the guy I bought it off off and he said he was told it was a cb 750 motor when he bought it...some where someone is lying cause it's a 550..found the stamping behind the oil cooler lines this morning while enjoying my coffee & farting around looking it over more..not upset, it's still going to be a fun build...plus, i only paid 450!!..

This post was updated on .
I thought you had a CBX600 or CBX650 engine. The 600 was a Swedish Market model and the 650 was a US model. Both with shaft drive but if you say it's a 550, it must be a CB550SC, called "Nighthawk", only in the US (which was also shaft drive).
