oil on #1 plug

bassproducts
On my 81 cb750 f I have a problem with misfiring on #1 cylinder. Plug is always wet with oil, but will fire on and off.  Problem with rings or head gasket?

You need to do a compression test, or a leakdown test to determine what the problem is. However either way it is going to require a top end rebuild.

I know what the compression test is , but never heard of a leak down test. What does that entail?

You can take an old spark plug, and break all the porcelain out of it, and then tap, and screw an air hose fitting into it, 1/4 pipe tap works perfect, or use JB Weld. Then you install this tool into a spark plug hole, and put compressed air to it (make sure it is on the compression stroke). If you hear air coming out the exhaust, then the exhaust valve is bad. If air comes out the carbs, then the intake valve is bad. If air comes out the crankcase breather, then the rings are bad. If air comes out of another cylinder, or the between the head, and cylinder, then the head gasket is bad.
