possible 71 cb750 project

tcmia
Hello everybody.
I normally ride a 80 CX500. The question is regarding a 71 CB750 with 9k miles. I have been offered to buy this bike as a project bike. It is in ok condition, but does have 1 problem. Start up very nice and idles smooth.
The problem is when trying to start riding. In first gear (1 down) and letting the clutch go it stalls. You would have to rev it up to 4k to get going on an flat surface. Once rolling it picks up speed well. It feels like compared to the CX as If I would try starting in 2nd or maybe 3rd.
I rode it on flat roads for about 20 minutes with no problems other than the stop and go.
I put it on center stand and with the engine running it shifts trough 5 gears. 1 down and 4 up as expected. It is almost impossible to get going from a stand still up a even slight hill. I checked the sprockets and they are 18 front and 48 rear. Is there something seriously wrong with the bike or is it worth tinkering with it?

I appreciate any comments. I don't mind wotking on the bike, but if it is a waste of time, I'd rather not buy it.

Thomas,
If your still considering this project, and you haven't done so already,  you might remove the plugs, put the bike in first gear and see if the engine turns over properly. Try it in 2nd gear as well to see if it is consideribly different from 1st. There may be some binding issue with first gear. Good luck. Gerald

it would be a good idea to check compression too. As it may not be a trani issue
