Ok, put a rectufier from my cb500 on my cb750, and now the bike stalls after riding it for a few mins. Could this smaller rectifier be causing the stalling?

Ahh....thanks so much for that link Hellbilly, looks like they are not compatable. So..... Guess it could cause some problems. Thanks again. All new to this motorcycle mechanics stuff. What is the difference between cb750k1 and k2. Sorry for the dumb question, but like I said new at this.

The CB750's were like this.
* 1969 CB750K or CB750K0
* 1971 CB750K1
* 1972 CB750K2
* 1973 CB750K3 (US-only, K2 elsewhere)
* 1974 CB750K4 (US/Japan-only, K2 elsewhere)
* 1975 CB750K5 (US-only, K2/K4 elsewhere), CB750F
* 1976 CB750K6, CB750F1, CB750A
* 1977 CB750K7, CB750F2, CB750A1
* 1978 CB750K8 (US-only), CB750F3, CB750A2
These aren't dumb questions, gotta learn stuff somehow and what better way than to ask? But basically all you need to know to find stuff out for your bike is the year of the cb750 and the letter, don't worry so much about that number, it really only means something to people that own these bikes.

ok here is a thought on this rectifier problem, took rectifier off a 1971 cb500 four, put it on my 1972 cb750, after doing this the bike stalls after riding for a few, also seems to not want to run all that great. now before I put this rectifier on the 750 the system was not charging the battery, but with full charge on battery was able to cruz it around the block a few times, and the bike ran great!! so question is, could the rectifier be to small thus causing not enough spark or juice to coils??? could this be true? checked on compatablity between the to rectifiers to find that they are not the same. 1971 cb500 to 1972 cb750. just need some advice before I go buying stuff to throw at it.

One more thing to check:
Listed in the Factory Service manual is a procedure to check your rotor and stator for good connectivity.
Go through those checks, and also look at the connection of the 3 yellow wires coming from your alternator going to your regulator/rectifier. If there is any corrosion or burnt parts, replace them. This is a known problem on a great deal of Asian motorcycles. I think you would have seen it when you replaced the rectifier, but I could be wrong.

Yes luke, did check rotor and stator, and all wires. Did find a burnt wire, and replaced it. Thanks for input.

The rectifier should have nothing to do with the coils, I am pretty sure that the rectifier only converts the AC output that comes from the charging system into DC, since battery power is DC, and the regulator keeps the voltages from spiking and damaging things. So the recitifier should only affect your battery really, I am thinking because that rectifier isn't compatible with the bike it's on then the wires from the bike don't go to the exact locations they should on the rectifier, kind of like if you were to switch them all around, and because a rectifier converts AC to DC, DC is only allowed to flow in 1 direction, and if the wires are switched around then they will completely stop the flow of power because it is going in the wrong direction.
My advice, just buy a new rectifier, before you damage something way more expensive and possibly more extensive to fix. I think in the mean time you are better off running the bike either without a rectifier or with the old one still on it.
Yes the bike will run good without it, it will just die after a while because the battery isn't charging, but I have an '81 that I have been starting periodically with no regulator/rectifier on it and it runs great, just keep the battery charged up.

I think Hellbilly makes a great point.Several actually. Everything he said is right about what the R/R does and all the rest makes perfect sense to me.That's what I'd do. I think rectifiers are about $40.

Thanks shiny, had to research the bejesus out of them since I had problems with my regulator/rectifier and am now waiting for the second one I have purchased to be shipped to me, but mine is an '81 so it is a single unit vs the separate units for the sohc cb's, so my cost is higher, so be glad you can get a rectifier so cheap! lol.
