replace engine bolts

I pulled off the transmission cover to replace the gasket.  The bolts were stuck, and i stripped the screw heads.  I wanted to replace the screws with aftermarket screws from the hardware store with allen heads instead of phillips heads.  the phillips head screws are just too easy to strip.  Does anypne see a problem with replacing the manufacturers screws?

As long as they're the right size and strength, the shape of the head you want on the bolts is not relevant to their function. Go for it!

Actually, you have to be somewhat careful. See depending on the type of screw, it will have a corrosive action with the aluminum.
So use 18-8 or series 300 material for the stainless steel and you can avoid this.

We just slathered the bolts with anti-sieze when using them in BBC's (aluminum block/heads). Never had a corrosion problem when doing that. Alloy choices were somewhat limited in the late '80's, except for the guys who could afford to have a batch custom made. Good advice. :)

Stainless has a tendency to gall aluminum, hence the racers using a dab of anti-sieze on the bolts going into aluminum. Anti-sieze also keeps them from getting stuck and difficult to remove due to surface corrosion.
