resurecting

jmaccabe1
Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum. I recently bought a 76 cb750 k6 that hasn't run in about a year. The previous owner had an electronic ignition installed which he then removed for a different bike. So when I got it there was no points plate or advance assembly. I picked up a couple and installed one. I think I've got the points gapped okay. But I'm looking for any suggestions as to getting it started even the obvious ones. Yes, there's gas in it and I have spark. Thanks. Jmac

ok so have you actually tried to start it yet? Make sure the kill switch is on obviously. Make sure fuel does flow to your carbs. Sometimes people will have fuel lines that are too long and coil and that can prevent fuel from getting where it needs.
You fitted points, When you set gap, it should be about .012 - .014 or so. It should be set to JUST start opening at the F marks for each set of points. To be honest, I installed a dyna-s a few years back but if I remember correctly(it should be stamped on the points plate too) the left point is 1-4 and the right is 2-3.
I think this also works the same for the coils.

You should also adjust your cam chain. The static way is to get 1-4 at the T mark and then back it up a few degrees. Then release the lock nut and then back out the bolt. The plunger sets itself. You may have to take off the unit and clean it, you can reuse the gasket there if you do not tear it badly. I tore the side of mine all the way across and reused it and no leaks. Just be careful cleaning it as you need to take out the plunger to do it and it is spring loaded and will shoot across the garage!

Also, did you make sure the carbs were clean? If you have not checked, you should pull them off and check things out. Make sure the bowls and float needles are clean. then unscrew your jets and make sure it is clean in there.

If you have not done so, get the manual here.

Errr... now I don't seem to be getting spark anymore. I'm understanding the dilemma of buying a non-running bike. I was told that all it needed was the points plate and advance unit. Now I think something else may be keeping it from turning over. Also, is it normal for the headlight to com on when the key gets put to the on position but then goes off when turned all the way to ignition?

Your ignition has 3 positions. Off, run, park. Off is off of course. Run is the second position. Park is where the headlight goes off and you just have taillight on. So when you want to run, you turn to the middle position.

ok. The black and white wires from the coils seem to have become detached, just noticed this morning but haven't had a chance to mess with it yet. Those two attach to one and run to ground. Right? The blue and yellow go to? Points plate? Battery? If my throttle cut off switch is bad that would inhibit spark too right?

The blue and yellow wires come from the points. I THINK the yellow goes to coil 2-3 and blue 1-4. You would want to check the manual though to be sure.
If the kill switch by the throttle is bad, yes that will stop spark too.

Ok think the wiring to the coils look alright. I've gotta check the kill switch. I know my electric start isn't working. It would be nice if it's correlated. Thanks.
