school me on jet kits

DWightSperber
I just bought a 1981 Honda CB 750 c. I am replacing the rusted 4 into 4 exhaust with 4 into 1. Also I am replacing the stock airbox with individual K&N pods. What type of jet kit do you recommend and why? According to the descriptions of the dynojet kits, stage 3 is the one I want but it says driveability may be compromised particularly with short stroke, high rpm motors. Does this apply to me? what have you guys used and like with this type of exhaust/intake combo?

Yes stage III is the one you want because it comes with the right needles in it for non-airbox use.  The needles are the most important thing in the kit, and I'd start with changing nothing else.  These carbs work best with the airbox, IMO.

Thanks,

Meaning using just the needles out of the $100+ kit, and leave the stock jets alone to start.  Well, if they have a +1 size primary main (72, 75) I'd put that in....Most stockers can use this.

I never went this route for my personal bike.  I found a set of direct-lift mikuni VM's that work great as-purchased used for $150.  Well, $20 worth of jets got them dialed in.

Why does dynojet say this about the stage3 kit:  driveability may be compromised particularly with short stroke, high rpm motors.

Would apply more to other bikes than your C.  What it should say for the DOHC honda is, "If you remove the airbox, you should have this."

Is it even worth removing the airbox? I already bought the filters but now am second guessing myself.

My 2c is no, but they can certainely be made to work.  To me, lots of work for no gain.  Now, pods on different carbs=different story.

by pods on differen't carbs do you mean that they work on other bikes or do you mean if I rebuilt the carbs to form to the new air pods they'd work. Sorry to keep bugging. My first bike and first fixer upper bike. Just trying to learn. It was strongly suggested by a mechanic at honda to put the air pods on, but he's a young guy into dirt bikes and what not. Has probably never even owned something this old.

I mean on different carbs...Same bike.  Like a set of smoothbores, CR's, etc.  These CV's seem to really need the vacuum of the airbox.  On ANY carb that doesn't rely on vaccum for slide pull pods are great!

what exactly is slide pull?

Re: school me on jet kits

Thse are slide carbs...slides move, and that's the throttle....Only on these when you twist the throttle there's no mechanical connection to the slides themselves...It operates via vacuum.  Just like a 'vacuum secondary' on a 4bbl carb on a car.  'Racing' carbs use a direct cable connection to the slides...Throttle postion directly relates to slide position.

Does this apply to the 82 CB750C as well? Just picked it up and it already has a 4 into 1 header with a straight pipe and am looking to get some more juice from it, mainly looking for throttle response, not too concerned about top end speed but more so acceleration
