steering neck

phil
hello all/anyone out there..

I'm trying to do a build on a 73 cb750
I have the steering neck and have installed new races? and bearing that I got from cycle X.
but now it appears that I don't have the correct nuts, washers and what-ever for the stem.
I got a new cap nut from cycle x but there's got to be more to it than this.
does anybody have a drawing of the parts needed?
Thanks in advance for any help...

Check out the schematic diagrams available on www.BikeBandit.com's web site:

http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1973-honda-cb750k3/o/m9234#sch399066

This should take you to the steering head diagram, directly.  If not, then select the "Control and Brake" tab, then the "Steering Head" graphic. If you right-click the schematic, you can save a copy of the diagram itself, to your local hard drive for future reference.  This web page will also show you part numbers, prices, and availability.  Cheers!

Hi Tools,
I don't what that conversion even is, so i guess not.
I'm just trying to get it back together stock. The problem is that it wasn't all there when I got it,so i really don't know exactly what is missing.
Today I was looking at my1973 cb450 and I'd swear it has the same stem and triple/tree set up.Wondering if I just take that apart it will answer my questions or not?
Plus I also found some other old pieces wrapped up in a rag; looks like they could be the missing culprits.
Thanks for responding so quikly.
Phil

The Allballz is a conversion to tapered roller bearings. The CB 450 is the same as the CB 750, but taking it apart sounds extrema. If you are not in a hurry. I could take some pictures tomorrow. I have an old frame with the trees still on it. I need to remove them, and get rid of the frame. This would be a good excuse to get it done.

O.K. yes that is what the new bearings I put in are, just did't know they were named that.
Seems like I'm putting you to a lot of trouble with pictures and all, but yes that would be helpful.
But only if you're goingto do it anyways.
Sgt.slag on this site already sent to me a web address with factory parts drawings.
You know how those things are, a bit grainny to look at. Its helpful, but looks like there is more little parts in there than I thought wre needed. Seals, washers, spacers etc.
I appreciate your help

You are correct:  those diagrams are grainy, and they are difficult to read sometimes.  Have you downloaded the Factory Service Manual (FSM) from this site, yet?  It is invaluable -- and free!  Clymer makes a decent book for my vintage bike, but the FSM is even better.  Cheers!

Since you have the tapered bearings. Pictures of the stock ones are not going to be much help. However I have installed the tapered bearings, and can talk you through it.
First drive the old races out of the neck (on some necks there is a spacer looking thing below the top race. This stays in the neck!!!!).
Drive in the new races (Make sure you have them top, and bottom). The top race will stick out about a 1/16 inch. The bottom will be up inside the neck (Make sure it bottoms out). I used a big socket to drive the bottom race in.
Drive the bottom race, and seal off the stem.
Stick the bottom bearing, and new seal up into the race in the neck. If it goes up into the neck place one or both of the large washers under it so that it is as close to flush to the bottom of the neck as you can get. A 1/16 inch tolerance is good.
Now place the washer/washers on the stem followed by the seal, and greased bearing (make sure the seal is in the right direction. It should be cupping the bearing. Drive the bearing down using a pipe that just fits over the stem.
Install the stem through the neck. Place greased top bearing on stem followed by the seal (again the seal should be cupping the bearing).
Then you have a threaded piece with notches for a spanner wrench on top (No 14). This goes on next. Tighten down then loosen 1/8 turn.
Now the top triple tree goes on.
Then a washer (No 19), and the cap nut (No 25), just do not tighten these until you have the forks back in.

You might have already figured out most of this, but I wrote it all out in case some one else might want to do the conversion. I will still get the pictures of the stock set up on this afternoon.

the seals should have came with the kit. They look like a washer with a rubber ring around them. I just looked at the cycle-x kit, and it seems there is only one seal. Is this right?

Thanks for the compliment. TOOLS
