I recently acquired a 1977 cb750...the bike had no tachometer cable so I went to ebay and bought one...I installed the cable, and ever since I installed it there has been oil leaking from the port...
Is there supposed to be some kind of rubber grommet or gasket to seal the connection to the head or is there some other type of problem?
Right now the metal tip of the cable is installed into the head so it is basically metal on metal...it doesn't seem right, and oil leak is minimal, but at the end of the day I would rather not have oil spewing from the connection point...any information would be helpful...thanks...Andrew

So i went to bike bandit and pulled up the head cover microfische, and it looks like I may be missing an oil seal...does that sound right to anyone?

Welcome to the forum. There should be a seal in there. It is pretty common, for them to go bad, and leak.

the seal goes under the head cover to plug that hole minus the hole where the cable goes in? I'm trying to picture it in my mind without looking at the bike...

No, the seal does NOT go under the cover. Go to your local honda show and get one for about $3 or so. Remove your current cable and use a hooked pick and pull out the old seal, put the new seal in and place the tach cable back in.

New seal works great...turns out the last guy had the seal in backward...replaced it anyway

Anyone know where I could get such a seal? The Honda store near me will only sell me the complete cable and will not sell just the seal. My cable is in pretty good shape, so I don't want to spend 30-40$ for a new cable just to get the seal.
thanks,
don

I couldn't find them individual either. I ordered a seal kit from VintageCB750.com. Having the extra seals has come in handy as a new leak springs forth occasionally. I think the kit is about $15

If you have the old seal, you could theoretically just go to the hardware store and pick up an o-ring for it?
I don't know what the part is precisely, but if it is just an o-ring...
You could also call up other Honda dealers, and see if they'll ship it to you. Or, my Yamaha dealer also has an online store. Give 'em a call!

Sorry, but I couldn't find the seals on that site. Could you send a link?

You gotta call them. Phone number is on the site. I deal with the Holland location.

Nope. It is actually a seal. With a spring loaded lip and everything.Just tiny. They look like this.

Ahh. In that case, I'd make a phone call to the dealer I mentioned and see if they'll throw one in the mail for you.
Or buy a gasket kit that has what you need.

This is really odd. I got mine by itself. It had to be ordered, which doesn't surprise me but it was available by itself. I suppose that could have changed though.
