The flash unit is under the left cover towards the back. I don't know how to test it but an electronic replacement is about $10 from an autoparts store. I dont have a particular number and when I replaced mine, I did not use a particular model and it has worked ok.
Have you checked your switch though? It could be dirty and needs cleaning and lube.
