There are two adjustments: one for the crank to cam chain and the other for the between the 2 cams chain.the procedure in the fsm details this nicely.

regarding the rattle: I think you are on the right path for the carb sync. Lots of methods out there. Try and find someone with a morgan carb tune or the 4 gauges setup. Either will work well.
