Do you still have points? A common issue is the point cover gasket sucks. It is cork and just does not seal worth a darn. What I did was to get some round rubber, kinda like a string of rubber. Cut it to the length I need and glue it together. I then use this as a gasket. Works good.
Other possible issues might be dirty grounds or that the plug wires are getting cracks and grounding out.
