I think you would have less trouble doing a rear trike but a front trike would be more stable in corners.
On the engine, The first thing I would do is port the head and drop in a bit of a hotter cam. I don't know if I would do 1000 on it. Word is they could suffer from oil leaks a lot more, ran hotter, and once worn out, that was it. The bore was so large that the 1000 sleeves could be seen between the fins on the outside.
Wiseco makes a good 836 kit and cyclex makes an 850. I guess a lot depends on how much you want to put into it for $. If you want to keep is somewhat reasonable, do the porting and mild cam bump.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!
