Steering Box Adjustment

I have a 1981 300D.   I want to make an adjustment to the steering box. The lock nut will come loose, but the adjustment screw within the lock nut turns with it because the two seem to be frozen together. And yes, I am using WD-40.

Can I unscrew the locking nut and take it out with the adjustment screw, try to loosen them up, and then put the nut and scfrew back into the steering box, and then make my adjustment?  Or will this mess the steering up entirely?
