Tail light and instrument lights may be on the same fuse.  If your tail light housing was loose, it's possible the positive wire for the tail light contacted the frame and shorted out the fuse.  Check for a blown fuse, and replace if necessary.

I don't have much expertise with the SOHC 750s, but I do know a little about wiring. I'd hunt down the schematic/wiring diagram for your bike on the home page and see where it all goes.
