+1 for carb sync making a difference.  I found my Avenger II was WAY out of sync on Sunday, so I got it all tweaked out.  Starts easier, smoother operation, shifts nicer, a bit quieter (not as much clatter), and I hope to see the mileage pick up a bit as well.  My bike is a Honda Shadow, so sync'ing 2 carbs is a lot easier than 4.  But I lose the "cool" ness of the inline 4.

Here's the trick for the Honda 4s:
work on cylinders 3 and 4, and get them to line up.
work on cylinders 1 and 2, and get them to line up.
THEN, balance between 3&4 and 1&2.

I did verify this with an older Honda mechanic.
