I often have soup from the Chinese restaurant for my lunch. It comes in a big plastic pot with a sealable lid. I put parts in them and label them with masking tape.
Sorry to state the obvious but there are no push rods in an engine with an overhead cam.
You will probably struggle a bit re-assembling the gear shift mechanism.
I can't see your justification for rebuilding the engine at the moment. If I were you, I would get it running, in a frame and do a compression test and see if it goes through the gears properly before you commit yourself to more expense. The minute you start dismantling it you are committing to some cost at least - best part of $100 for a gasket and seal kit.
